But Americans need to look beyond the legalists and fundamentalists in this firestorm and think clearly about the social and historical realities related to these two words.

First, our nation was founded on freedom of religion. This means that despite the many professions of faith and belief in God expressed in founding documents, there was never a requirement that citizens adhere to any particular faith — or any faith at all. There was no requirement they believe in God to be treated as full citizens with all rights that derive from citizenship.

"Freedom from religion" is implied in "freedom of religion." No democracy worthy of the name can force its citizens to profess belief in God or in any particular deity.
