Damn Shame

I don't normally copy whole articles, but the Laredo Times doesn't bother to archive.

The loss of this MD and the resulting need for women to drive five hours round trip to an abortion provider just sucks.

Note the shameless plug for some loser religious clinic at the end.

Reproductive choice is so vital and a large community just lost theirs.

Abortion clinic loses physician

BY TRICIA CORTEZ
Times staff writer

The physician who does abortion procedures at the New Women's Clinic will no longer travel from San Antonio to perform these services for Laredo women.

For now, the clinic is referring all abortions to San Antonio.

Barbara Woodward, of San Antonio, who owns the New Women's Clinic, declined to comment Monday about a possible replacement and whether or not the clinic will remain open.

She also did not return a Monday phone call to comment on the reasons behind terminating the visiting physician's services at the Laredo clinic, 3710 Santa Ursula.

Meanwhile, pro-life activists in Laredo celebrated the news "This is an answer to our prayers. No abortions in Laredo. We have prayed for this for years," said Laura Boes, director of Casa La Esperanza Pro-Life Center.

Casa La Esperanza is a crisis pregnancy center that also performs free pregnancy tests as a community service. For women carrying unwanted pregnancies, Boes said staff is ready to show and explain alternatives to abortion.

"Everything is strictly confidential," she added.

For more information, call or visit Casa la Esperanza at 602 Hidalgo, or 723-1900.
